Code of Conduct
Created in partnership with Call for Culture, this Code of Conduct guides how we show up with safety, respect, and care. We welcome anyone to adapt it for their own communities.
A Commitment to Safety, Respect, and Learning
By joining the Rethink Ability community, I commit to fostering an environment where all people, especially those from historically marginalized communities, are treated with dignity, respect, and care. This community values open dialogue, learning, and the complexities of human experience, including different cultural, social, and identity perspectives.
I understand that this code is a living framework designed to support constructive, respectful engagement, not to police feelings or create an environment of over-cautiousness.
By signing this Code of Conduct, I agree to the following commitments:
1. Prioritize Safety
Everyone deserves to participate in spaces free from intentional harm and discrimination.
This movement creates space where people can engage authentically, without fear of harassment or marginalization. Emotional, psychological, and physical safety are essential for meaningful connection and growth. We acknowledge that unintentional harm can happen and commit to addressing it openly.
I will avoid actions or language that are intentionally harmful, discriminatory, or dehumanizing.
I will be attentive to how my words and behaviors affect the safety of others and remain open to hearing when harm is experienced.
I will honor others’ boundaries and requests in the moment, recognizing that fully understanding their experiences may require ongoing dialogue.
2. Honor Differences with Clarity and Compassion
Diversity of identity and experience enriches our community and requires intentional respect.
We recognize that cultural, social, and personal backgrounds shape how we see and engage with the world. Respect means actively listening, avoiding assumptions, and affirming others’ identities without minimizing them.
I will honor the identities and lived experiences of others, especially those from marginalized communities.
I will avoid dismissive, discriminatory, or exclusionary behavior, and take ownership if I misstep.
I will respect that others may choose whether or how to share their experiences and not expect them to bear the emotional labor of educating me.
3. Commit to Learning and Growth
Continuous learning is key to building a just and inclusive community.
Growth requires humility, curiosity, and a willingness to shift. We’re here to learn, not to be right. We do not expect perfection but commit to ongoing education and openness to feedback, knowing that growth is a process.
I will remain curious and open to feedback about my impact, prioritizing understanding over being right.
I will proactively seek education on equity, justice, and inclusion topics without relying solely on others.
I will practice patience with myself and others as we navigate complex, sometimes uncomfortable conversations.
4. Practice Accountability
Accountability builds trust and prioritizes community well-being.
When harm happens, we take responsibility, without defensiveness. We take responsibility for our impact regardless of intent and understand that repairing harm is a process that requires honesty, empathy, and sometimes discomfort. We acknowledge that this takes practice, so we ask that you approach this work with a growth mindset.
I will own my actions and their effects, listening carefully and prioritizing the work to repair harm when it occurs.
If I cause harm, I will listen, reflect, and take steps to repair it when possible.
I understand that conflicts may not have clear “right” or “wrong” sides and will approach resolution with openness.
5. Uphold the Integrity of the Community
Our shared values and commitments shape how we engage and care for each other.
We protect the mission of this movement by showing up with consistency, care, and integrity. That includes holding ourselves and each other accountable, knowing that community care sometimes means setting boundaries.
I will engage in ways consistent with this Code and the mission of this movement.
I will contribute to a culture where accountability is offered and received with care, not as punishment.
I recognize that protecting safety and inclusion sometimes requires setting boundaries and having difficult conversations.
